Calum Graham

With guest artist: Sarah Clark

Calum Graham is poised to be setting the bar for guitar grooviness for many years to come.  His tunes are energetic, infectious, and show a compositional maturity well beyond what I would normally expect to hear from such a young player.  What can I say, I'm a fan!"  -  Don Ross (Two time winner of the prestigious U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship)

Keith Smith  “The older I get, the less I’m inclined to believe in talent.  The lack of it is so often the excuse for not  trying.  It’s no accident that the best players are, without exception, the ones who worked the hardest, so it’s always inspiring when you hear a guitar player of Calum’s youth who has already demonstrated the huge commitment it requires to approach a real mastery of the instrument.”  -  Keith Smith (One of Canada’s finest Jazz Guitarists)

Ann Vriend

Ann VriendAnn Vriend: "The Aretha Franklin of Americana"
“With her soaring vocals, impressive song-writing ability, and instrumental prowess, Vriend is truly an all-in-one package." – Obscure Sound, NYC

Ann Vriend (pronounced Vreend) was born in Vancouver, BC. When her parents discovered their 3-year-old could play nursery songs on a Fisher Price xylophone, they encouraged her musical development by enrolling her in violin lessons. At the age of nine, when Vriend sought to accompany herself as a songwriter, she took piano lessons from an elderly woman down the street who charged $5 per visit. In high school, Vriend reluctantly performed 3 of her compositions (meant to be sung by friend instead of her) at a talent show. Accolades from her fellow students evolved into various projects with older students in bands, and eventually into praise from critics, the media, and fans around the world.

Vriend's vulnerable yet exquisite voice is often the first thing that turns heads; it has been described as an enchanting cross between Dolly Parton and a young Aretha Franklin, while her story-like but often enigmatic lyrics reveal her lauded literary depth, influenced by writers such as Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, and Thom Yorke.

Vriend's songs maintain a natural knack for melody, garnering her hits on both independent and commercial radio stations in her home town of Edmonton, Alberta. Her music has been featured in a television show DVD release, and she was commissioned to write a song for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

From composition to composition her music varies between folk, retro soul, Americana, college pop, and jazz influenced numbers, yet she maintains a consistency of sound in her immediately recognizable vocal and lyrical approach. Vriend’s quirkiness and self-taught piano stylings draw comparisons to Regina Spektor and Kate Bush, though she also has a country and soul vocabulary in the vein of Ray Charles and Lyle Lovett. In short, "When it comes to women with pianos, there are endless comparisons to make, but Vriend stands out from the crowd" (Drum Media, Australia).
Vriend is also known for her live performances, balanced perfectly between breathtaking, heartbreaking songs and charming, witty humor, and resulting in over 12,000 album sales to date as an independent artist, sold almost entirely from off the stage. It is common for people to cry during her performances. (And laugh!). Vriend has headlined at festivals as far away from home as Germany and Australia, and is as comfortable performing in the humble setting of a house concert as she is on stage at famous theatres. At the moment Vriend is recording her next studio album, which she will release and tour during the 2010/2011 season in Germany, Australia, and Canada.

Known increasingly as "an artist not content to follow" (CKUA Radio) Vriend continues to make loyal fans wherever she goes. David Ritz, author of many biographies (Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye) writes: "Once every generation... a singer-songwriter emerges with the creative fire to set the music world ablaze. Ann Vriend has the fire."

Old Man's Beard

Michael Shaver - Guitar, Vocals and Songwriting
Jesse Clarke - Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals and Songwriting
Darrin Herting - Bass and Percussion
Leon Power – Drums
Stephanie Webster - Vocals and Percussion

From the black heart of coal country in British Columbia's Elk Valley, Old Man's Beard began as the song writing duo of Michael Shaver and Jesse Clarke.  Since forming in early 2008, Jesse and Mike have forged a repertoire of original music that exposes the good, the grand, and the unknown.  As a duo they have excited audiences with their unique blend of reggae, boot-stompin' folk, and rock and roll.  After relocating to the interior of BC, the duo has evolved into a five-piece unit that includes Darrin Herting (formerly of Arthur Funkarelli) on bass, Leon Power (Steve Brockley, Herting Verberg Power Trio) on drums, and Stephanie Webster's beautiful vocals.  Rich, well-placed harmonies, toe-tappin' rhythms and streamlined guitar work have become standard for a band that has been able to move crowds of young and old, lovers and enemies, Aussies and Englishmen, damsels, dames and dukes.  After a winter of writing and recording, the band has released its first album, 'The River,' and are currently touring in support of the disc.  Old Man's Beard have had their song 'Dawson Bound' featured on the popular television show Daily Planet.  Since mid-July, 'Tofino' has received play on CBC radio's province-wide program, All Points West. The group recently performed as part of the 2009 Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival and participated in the 2009 British Columbia Interior Music Awards (BCIMA) as a performer and nominee in the Best New Artist category.  Old Man's Beard loves to play music anywhere and anytime for their growing fan base that is quickly reaching across the Canadian landscape.

NEW - October

Steve Pineo

Details to follow

Steve PineoSteve Pineo is the writer of “Canadian Man” by Paul Brandt and “Too Bad For Me” by Prairie Oyster.  He is also a unique and talented performer in his own right.  Working as a solo act, with an acoustic trio, with a four piece roots rock band or an 8 piece horn band, Steve’s sound is immediately recognizable.  Like Ry Cooder and Mark Knopfler, Steve is a virtuoso guitar player who’s style was originally blues-based but has expanded its palette over the years.  Also like Cooder and Knopfler, Steve writes about characters who could be part of a soundtrack in a “slice of life” movie.  His flair for sly satire and gentle humour is comparable to John Prine and Ray Davies.
Steve was born in Toronto Ontario, learned guitar at age nine, moved to Calgary in 1978, went to Western Canada High School, took a brief stab at post secondary at U Vic., and then started his musical career.  He played solo acoustic gigs at the Kensington Deli Café one night and blues gigs at the King Eddie the next day and was virtually unstoppable at house parties.  With a legendary bag of songs, he could sing until sun up without repeating a tune.  Although he’s a little older and wiser now, Steve Pineo still pursues his music with a relentless, restless passion and a thirst for truth and inspiration that will continue for the rest of his life.

Doc MacLean's National Steel "Darker Ways" Blues Tour

5th Annual Blues Event will be 100 Solo Shows    (3rd performance at Carlson’s on Macleod)
Darker Ways. Roads less travelled. Blue highways.  Places found in the crease of the map.  Encounters with strangers on strange days.  A money candle in a broken window.  It's Doc MacLean, watching the tail light reflections tracking in the rear view mirror.  Doc, drinking bourbon by the roadside.  Doc with his battered 1929 National steel guitar.
Doc MacLean. He's a blues vagabond writing from the dark side of the blues highway.  He's spent the last forty years exploring the road atlas from A to Z- surfacing sometimes on big stages in fancy halls, sometimes streetside trolling for change and a meal.  No managers, agents, record companies.  No fancy new guitars. He's a traveller, a collector and teller of songs and stories- a songster in the blues tradition.  Blues Revue magazine called him "the Prince of Darkness."
Doc MacLean’s National Steel “Darker Ways” Blues Tour.  September through December 2010.  One hundred shows, coast to coast.  No venue too big or too small, no place too forsaken.  Now booking and accepting expressions of interest from all Canadian territories.  Bring The Blues to Your Town.
Darker Ways will be the 5th annual outing of the all acoustic, coast to coast National Steel Blues series.  In a departure from large venue, songs and stories in the round presentations, Darker Ways will be a solo presentation focused more on smaller towns and smaller rooms.  “I’m looking forward to exploring some deep blues in these settings,” says Doc, “I’m planning the most intimate, story filled shows that I’ve had a chance to do in years.”

Tim Williams

Tim WilliamsJuno nominee, Tim Williams has made Calgary his home for more than a decade.  He possesses an arsenal of stringed instruments, a vast repertoire of blues, rags and original songs, and an evening’s worth of anecdotes ranging from the hilarious to the historical.
Tim Williams (AB) is a blues-based singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist.  A 40-year veteran of the folk scene in North America, Tim still finds inspiration from his original Californian coffeehouse roots to blues, bluegrass, and 50's rhythm and blues and far, far beyond.  Mention blues anywhere in Canada and Tim William's name will inevitably come up.  He proves over and over what 'Living Blues' magazine said "...Tim Williams has the taste, panache and style to pull it off.”
Tim has appeared with B.B. King, John Hammond, Honeyboy Edwards, Pee Wee Crayton, George 'Harmonica' Smith, Paul Geremia, James Cotton, Queen Ida, Chubby Carrier, Johnny Young, Johnny Shines, Big Walter Horton, Lightnin' Hopkins, Taj Mahal, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Jesse Fuller, Fred McDowell, Guy Davis, Charlie Musselwhite, Fruteland Jackson and more...and that's only the blues artists.  Add to that list comics Steve Martin and Pat Paulson, Jazz musicians Larry Coryell and Mose Allison, Bluegrass giant Earl Scruggs and songwriters like Eric Anderson and Jimmy Dale Gilmore and you begin to understand the depth of the man and his music!

The Hamiltone Trio

Featuring:  Dave Hamilton, Mel Wilson & Julian Kerr

The Hamiltone TrioDave Hamilton not only plays the guitar, he is a master of the guitar.  Dave is also actively involved in studio production for many artists and can be reached at Hamiltone Productions.
Dave Hamilton has been producing music since the early 1980's and has owned and operated his own studio, Hamilton Productions, since 1990.  For over 30 years he has been playing guitar professionally and he has won the "Alberta Instrumentalist of the Year" award three consecutive years (1990 / 91 / 92).  Over the years Dave has played Country, Country Rock, Pop Music, Jazz, Western Swing and various other styles of music that he can delve into for inspiration, as well as copying the styles heard on the radio today.
Mel Wilson has played with such luminaries as Diamond Joe White, Ian Tyson and Amos Garrett.

(Mel) Wilson’s been playing guitar since he was 12, after seven years of playing piano.  He went to Midwestern University in his native Texas, studying music, but not guitar.
“I did woodwind, if you can believe that, I play clarinet,” he said with a laugh.
He’s been a professional musician since he was 15 and has played with many illustrious musicians through the years, including a long stint in Ian Tyson’s band.  He plays what he calls “traditional country,” nothing like what he says you hear these days.
“What they call country music today is pop that wasn’t good enough to play on pop stations so they call it country,” he said with a laugh.
He cites some of his main influences as Merle Haggard, Tom Waits, and Hank Williams Sr. He said a few years ago he got to play a set with Don Helms, the steel guitar player for the Drifting Cowboys, Williams’ band.    Excerpt from the High River Times

Julian Kerr is a professional musician who has played piano, bass, and guitar for over 30 years. Julian has played with such notables as the Original Cast (One Tin Soldier & Mr. Monday – gold record hits) also with Gay Delorme, Bo Diddley, as well as numerous Calgary bands.  Veteran of many recording sessions with various artists, Julian is grateful for the knowledge and experience gained from playing with so many talented musicians.  Julian’s been teaching for the past 10 years; and his students enjoy developing their skills with his gentle humor and support.

Gordon Belsher and Cynthia MacLeod

Gordon Belsher & Richard WoodGORDON BELSHER has been entertaining audiences in Canada and around the world for more than a quarter of a century performing solo at concerts, ceilidhs, conventions, and pubs.
As accompanist and featured vocalist with Prince Edward Island fiddlers Richard Wood and Cynthia MacLeod, Gordon has toured extensively across Canada, in the U.S., the U.K., Europe, and Japan.
His solo CD Call Up All the Neighbours was nominated for "Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the Year" at the 2008 East Coast Music Awards.  His previous solo recording Reel in the Flickering Light, was also nominated at the 2003 ECMA's in the same category.
Whether playing before large festival crowds or in intimate folk club settings, Gordon Belsher’s engaging personality, charming voice, and versatility on a variety of instruments are a recipe for a memorable evening.
Interestingly enough, Gordon began his musical career in the late 1960s in Edmonton, Alberta.  From his teen years with a working rock and roll band pounding out the latest Beatles tunes for dance crowds in Edmonton, he followed his rock and roll dreams into bands that toured extensively across Canada and into the U.K.  By the mid-seventies he was touring across Canada as a sideman for rock and roll pioneer Buddy Knox ("Party Doll").
A move to Prince Edward Island in the late seventies led to a change in musical direction.  Belsher formed the seminal Maritime Celtic group Jar O'Comfort. Over a 16 year span, the group released four albums - all of which were well received by both critics and audiences alike.

Cynthia MacLeodCYNTHIA MACLEOD:   From her home base in tiny Prince Edward Island, Canada, fiddling sensation Cynthia MacLeod has built an international reputation that is expanding around the globe.
It’s a reputation founded in raw talent, nurtured by boundless energy, and polished to a gleaming finish by a touring schedule that has taken her across Canada, through New England, and as far away as Japan. Audiences far and wide have thrilled as this tiny dynamo takes the stage for whirlwind performances that garner spring-loaded standing ovations everywhere she performs.
Just as remarkable is the acceptance and respect accorded Cynthia by her peers. In a part of the world known for dazzlingly talented fiddlers, fellow musicians have awarded her more than a dozen Music PEI awards, including multiple awards as Roots/Traditional Artist of the Year and Instrumental Artist of the Year. She has also twice been chosen by audiences as Entertainer of the Year.
And all this before she’s 25 years old.
In that time, she has produced three critically-acclaimed (and top-selling) CDs.  Head Over Heels (2002) won her instant credibility with a hard-bitten music industry and was named Album of the Year.  Her second CD, Crackerjack (2004), built on her growing reputation as a precise, lively interpreter of traditional fiddle music.  Hot Off The Floor (2007) combined that traditional sound with newer compositions and cemented Cynthia’s place among the very best in East Coast fiddle music.
Cynthia’s grace and charm with an audience is unchanged whether she is performing at home at her perpetually standing-room-only ceilidhs in Brackley Beach, PEI, or taking the stage in front of thousands at the 2005 World Expo in Aichi, Japan.  She is equally comfortable in an intimate workshop in New England, an enormous festival setting in Cape Breton or Goderich, Ontario, or bursting onto the stage to a packed house in St. Albert, Alberta or Whistler, B.C.
Her growing fan base across Canada and throughout the New England states knows what to expect from Cynthia – soft-spoken down-home charm followed by a high-energy, electrifying show with fun, fiddle, and step-dancing – and often all three at the same time!

AWARDS:

  • Album of the Year for Head Over Heels (2002)
  • Instrumental Artist/Group of the Year (2002, 2003 & 2004)
  • Roots/Traditional Artist/Group of the Year (2002, 2003 & 2004)

Amos Garrett

Martin Kerr is performing at Carlson's on macleod on December 23, 24 2007What they are saying about "GET WAY BACK"

"Garrett might have met his perfect match on this tribute to singer-songwriter Percy Mayfield. Amos Garrett's guitar work is a soulful blend of elegant rhythmic attack and scintillating lead lines. He has a way of turning the normal into the improbable, kind of like changing the rules of algebra, but they still work.Performing Mayfield's music, he sneaks up on the emotions of the song's with a weathered voice that feels like it's coming from a favorite friend.Get Way Back is one of those albums that just had to be made, but still is a swinging suprise."  -- Sun Newspapers -- Los Angeles, Ca. May 16/08.

"Besides booming, forceful baritone and teeming guitar solos and riffs,Garrett's adaptations are fortified by excellent horn section arrangements from Dave Babcock, and some stirring keyboard and organ contributions from Ken Whiteley and Ron Casat.Garrett's versions never lose either the flavor or the impact that their creator envisioned."  -- Nashville City Paper -- May 2/08

"Garrett's smooth baritone voice, his sublime guitar playing and superb band arrangements are a perfect fit for the masterful songs of Percy Mayfield, "the poet laureate of the blues."  -- Montreal Gazette -- May 15/08

"Garrett,an Alberta transplant from Detroit via T.O. and Montreal, has arguably made the best record of a damn good (and long) career, paying homage to Percy Mayfield with suitably understated delivery and big time blues chops."  -- Calgary Herald -- May 9/08

"Get Way Back is such a masterpiece and powerful musical statement that it leads listeners to think the marriage of Garrett's multiple gifts and Mayfield's wondrous songbook was determined by some otherworldly force."  Edmonton Journal -- May 3/08

" Amos Garrett has completed a stirring tribute to one of the best loved and most prolific writers in all of blues.Get Way Back may well be the masterpiece in Amos' long and storied career!" Until next time...

Morgan Davis

Bluesnight at Carlson's

For nearly four decades Morgan Davis has been on the road travelling across Canada, the United States and Europe. His performances draw from a rich tradition of country blues, as well as his own contemporary songs infused with wit and a large dose of humour.
Originally from Detroit, Davis grew up listening to a prolific mix of rhythm and blues. The music of Jimmy Reed, Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino was in the air. He later moved to California with his family, and then in 1968 left for Canada.
While living in Rochdale College, Toronto's mecca for the subculture of the late 1960's, he immersed himself in the study of Delta Blues, especially the music of Robert Johnson. Toronto's music scene in the early 1970's was the perfect place for Davis to cut his teeth as a journeyman, having the opportunity to see and play with many legendary performers. Bukka White, Johnny Shines, Sunnyland Slim, Snooky Pryor, Hubert Sumlin, and John Hammond were encouraging supporters.
Davis hit the road with the Rhythm Rockets, The Knights of The Mystic Sea, and David Wilcox's first band, eventually forming his own trio.
Over the years he has had the privilege of opening for Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, John Hammond, Albert Collins, and Eric Bibb. A highlight of his career was backing the phenomenal Dr.John.
Morgan has shared the stage with Colin Linden, who also produced his second album, James Harmon, Gene Taylor, Sue Foley, Ray Bonneville, Carlos DelJunco and the late Dutch Mason.
Davis' songwriting talent received international recognition when Colin James covered his searing ballad "Why'd You Lie".
Morgan's first solo recording "Blues Medicine", on Electro-Fi records, garnered critical acclaim as well as awards for songwriting and production. His multi- award winning release "Painkiller" won an impressive four awards at the 2004 Maple Blues Awards and not long after took home Canada's top music prize...the Juno for Blues Album of the Year.
Davis has established a rich career as a solo artist, and also performs with stellar lineups of musicians as a trio or full band.
His most recent recording, "At Home In Nova Scotia", pays homage to Atlantic Canada where he has been a resident since 2001.
Morgan's passion for the Blues has never wavered... and he fully expects to be on the road for the rest of his life.

Highway Three Roots Review

Featuring: Dave McCann, Leeroy Stagger & John Wort Hannam

Dave McCann is the latest full time musician to move to our little piece of heaven out on the prairies.  Dave's had a busy year with the release of his third studio Album "Dixiebluebird".  His latest offering saw Dave and his band do the Canadian unheard of and head South to Nashville to record with Rodney Crowell sideman Will Kimbrough.  The result is an 11 song masterpiece that invokes the spirit of early Whiskeytown and a Twangier Wilco.  As far as Canadian roots music goes "Dixiebluebird" is a strong candidate for album of the year.
The rural outskirts of British Columbia is a place where desperation lurks and the bars are full of broken-hearted dreamers wondering what the hell’s happened to them.  Raised here by his grandparents and his mechanic-father, it’s no wonder that an air of domestic discord and dreams of white picket fences charge the song craft of one Leeroy Stagger.
From the prairies in Southern Alberta comes one of Canada’s best folk/roots songwriters, John Wort Hannam.  For five years John Wort Hannam taught grade 9 language arts on the largest reserve in Canada – The Kainai Nation, part of the Blackfoot Confederacy. But in 1997 he heard a Loudon Wainwright III record and was hooked by the music and stories.  In 1998 he bought a guitar and learnt some chords. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Music is an art form whose medium is sound.  Common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture.  The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike), "(art) of the Muses".
The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context.  Music ranges from strictly organized compositions (and their recreation in performance), through improvisational music to aleatoric forms.  Music can be divided into genres and subgenres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to individual interpretation, and occasionally controversial.  Within "the arts", music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art, and auditory art.
To many people in many cultures music is an important part of their way of life.  Greek philosophers and ancient Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies.  Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to.  However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."  According to musicologist Jean-Jacques Nattiez, "the border between music and noise is always culturally defined—which implies that, even within a single society, this border does not always pass through the same place; in short, there is rarely a consensus.... By all accounts there is no single and intercultural universal concept defining what music might be, except that it is 'sound through time'."
